the memory of a garment…

Memories are our most cherished possessions. Without them we are left with truly nothing. The fear of losing who we are, what we have accomplished, survived, and struggled for, lives within all of us. It is something that is beyond the physical. And we can’t stop it, cure it, or rebuild it once lost. The power of forgetting can indeed be our most detrimental vice.

Beauty exists in the remnants of our memories. The footprints we leave through our daily life. Perhaps this is why we cling to the vintage. We are desperately grasping at the past, to not forget the history of those who have lived before us, and those before them. These memories, leave us with an impression, an imprint. It is rare that we can recall every detail, every solitary moment, but we know the feeling, the bones of it, the inside.

When settling down to develop my next pieces for Not That Young, I felt very strongly bound to this idea of the memory of objects. How could I represent in a tactile way the impression of a memory?

Without delving too deeply into the details of each garment, I wanted to show its structure, its inside. At its core, what held it together. Similar to how we recall memories, details are left out and blurred, only selected moments are visible. Our memories are sewn together, and we remember the focal points. The imprint of the stitches holding the garments together reveal the story of each garment, showing its craftsmanship and identity.

I have developed some t-shirts around this concept. Using the method I developed in the Fingerprint Experiment, I have taken the most prominent features of garments, sewn samples of each and placed them on my shirts. Using my fingers I push fabric paint through my sewn samples. Once the sewn pieces are removed from the shirts, we are left with an impression, a memory of what was once there.

All of the shirts I have made so far are samples… but are for sale. Prices range between 35-45 per shirt.

You can customized with each order, such as shortening the sleeves, v-neck or crew neck collar, details on pockets or vest, and paint colour. Any shirt can also be transformed into a singlet (tank top). The objective is to create shirts that are unique to each customer, put your spin on it, create the imprint of your memory.

Single pocket t-shirt – small 35.00

Mini vest and pocket t-shirt – large 45.00

Henley front shirt with two patch pockets – medium 45.00

Single pocket with buttonhole – medium 35.00

Vest with single pocket – large 45.00

Please feel free to contact me with any requests, questions… anything at all.

big announcement!!

NOT THAT YOUNG

BEING SOLD IN MILAN BOUTIQUE MISAEL!!!!

That’s right!! Not That Young was picked up by clothing boutique Misael at FuoriSalone last week. The boutique is opening its doors May 6, 2010 on Via Thaone de Revel 3. Just outside where the NTY exhibit and the Designers Block space this year. Focusing on Art, Style, Design, and Food, Misael seems like a haven for design of all functions, retailing products that focus on uniqueness and innovativeness. We are so excited to be apart of this boutique and consider ourselves very fortunate!!

The retail venue was used as exhibit space during the Salone last week. You may recognize the space. Here are a few pictures of the location!

We are not sure how it happened, but the Not That Young exhibit and FuoriSalone has come to an end. 3 long months of planning and hard work went into preparing for this exhibit, and somehow it all worked out better than any of us expected. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to see our exhibit, supported us during our journey, sent us congratulations… we really appreciate it! This was a wonderful project and collaboration. The Designers Block was amazing, and we think a perfect fit for us, we were very lucky with our first exhibit.

It is safe to say this won’t be the end of Not That Young… stay with us on this roller coaster and see what comes next!!

Not That Young on the Fuori Salone Blog!!!

Here is my attempt at a translation into english….

For me, a beautiful activity on a Sunday remains to be the afternoon walk, that calm, calm outside from the chaos of the metropolitan. In this case, outside the chaos of Via Tortona. And where to take a walk where it is not isolated? For a good e-reporter like me, it is not necessary to enjoy only from a beautiful, small apartment, but to try to discover what the Fuorisalone proposes: but little is good. An exception is Designersblock: a collective of young designers. They have created an island, nearly a paradise outside everything else; an island in an island. And not only the atmosphere, but also the exhibits are remarkable and fun: several kinds of atmospheres, all of which are interesting. Between them all, I prefer the collective of “Not That Young”, creators of t-shirts that are very personal and original, and if I had some more euro with me I would have made a purchase. Considering that they are all made by hand and one-off designs… they are bread for a fashion victim! Unfortunately if you want to see them or buy one through Fuorisalone you must yourselves be quick to go. Otherwise, I send you to their site www.notthatyoung.com   Check it out.

A quick photo outside in the main courtyard of Designers Block.

Free beer bringing Milan together!

ALMOST! We got alot of fingerprints yesterday! Slowly it will become black!

Yesterday was a great day for Not That Young at the Designers Block Exhibition. The cocktail party was last night and it was fantastic! Thanks so much to everyone who came out to support us. Especially everyone from Domus Academy!!!

The response we have been receiving so far is very positive and enthusiastic. We knew we were taking a chance showing an exhibit that was more fashion-oriented at a product design fair. But the feedback from coming to see us has been nothing but supportive. It is really wonderful to be apart of something so amazing as the Fuori Salone,, then to be exhibiting with such a great collective as the Designers Block… we know we are very lucky.

Unfortunately we don’t have too many photos throughout the night time. The NTY exhibit got a bit crazy, t-shirts were flying in the air, people began painting their faces black… well not really, but we were very busy all night…. happily busy!! So it became a bit difficult to take photos. But we took some great video clips of the night… especially the impromptu bagpipe player! Stay tuned for a video soon….

It has been a fantastic two days…. lets keep up the good times all the way until the end!!

But we thought it would be great to have it available as well online for anyone who is interested in reading.
